MONARCH MOUNTAIN, COLORADO, USA

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2015

Long before we left for our trip we were plotting our stops.
Back then I don't think that I've ever heard of Monarch Mountain but now we sure won't forget it.

Search and enjoy

After a couple of hot spring days and fun in and around Salida, we rolled this morning in brilliant cold early morning sunshine and by the time we got to Monarch Pass (anyone ever been there?) and the ski mountain, all reports were confirmed that this place has and is getting dumped on.

On my way up to see what we'll find.

Monarch Mountain is an authentic Colorado ski resort with high elevations, abundant snowfall, gorgeous scenery and excellent terrain. The ski area is situated high along the Continental Divide in the Sawatch Range within the San Isabel National Forest near the towns of Salida, Buena Vista and Gunnison. The resort features amazing tree skiing, wide open alpine bowls and long intermediate trails.

This place has limited lift service compared to some other Colorado giants but fine for me and what seems like a happy contingent of locals.

Here at the base we are touching close to 11,000ft and the top lift will spit me out close to 12,000 ft.

Here Kate is exploring some lower trails till the patrollers politely asked her to track back so as they can proceed with a LITTLE avalanche control.
Please and thank you.

Well done
Well done indeed.

My eight hour ticket seemed to have timed out, leg wise, so we are on our way to our next stop,
Crested Butte.

But first on our way, just around the corner, we have to summit another Continental Divide traverse, Monarch Pass.

Anybody been there?
