HASTA LA VISTA SANTIAGO, CHILE. NEMY, KATE AND PAUL

September 07, 2016

Kate and I will be looping back through Santiago on more than one occasion, but here on our last day of our initial visit we're of to take in the:

Museum of Memory and Human Rights

pack your bags, we're going to the misty mountain

We travel trying to take in the board spectrum of what and where we are. Part of Chile's recent past is what one does and doesn't want to know of what goes on in this world outside a somewhat insulated and very privileged Canada.

There are few names that are synonymous with the worst atrocities and indignities to humankind than Augusto Pinochet.

When I was enjoying the freedom of my youth and young adulthood, circa 1973-1990, this country was in the grips of a brutal dictator's manifest that left no mechanism
in the reign of terror, crushing hope and ideologies, torture, suppression, executions, both public and secret, disappearances, perpetual fear ..........all with little discrepancy to gender, age, belief and nationality.

A great wall of individuals
(I assume many not unlike you and I.
Many like you and I who only wish for  basic freedoms and democracy)
who,
not simply,
vanished.

We found the exhibits both extremely well presented and moving. Sadly even with English audio aid, many warranted no interpretation

What this building holds and represents is beyond my capacity to imagine and even believe.
What this building holds and represents only
my resolve and minuscule understanding on what sadly continues to transpire in this world daily.

MAY THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH
AND GOODWILL TO HUMANKIND.

To better understand this world,
we try to travel this world.
For the better, with our hearts a little heavier,
 we and life moves on......

Tonight we will continue to explore and enjoy Santiago's ambiance and variety.

We again will only see a fraction of the city but where we do pass and experience we feel safe and comfortable.

Almost was worth getting my hair cut.
A barber shop with it's own DJ scratching vinyl.

Unfortunately also synonymous with Chile are earthquakes. Holding the not so envious record of the fifth strongest quake ever recorded since the introduction of the Richter scale. Here, as in many buildings, are suggested safety zones in the eventuality of some shake, rattle and roll.

QUESTION: If you were going to book a hotel room,
bottom or top floor?
Just don't lie in bed thinking about it.

Gracias Santiago
Usted y su gente nos han dado la bienvenida.

HASTA LA VISTA.
