After breaking Camp
Hicks we headed south along the east coast with just a best guess where we will
end our day. Along the way we came upon a side road to what is describe as, by
the International Dateline, the worlds most easterly lighthouse. How often do you
get that opportunity?
This is one of those unplanned
and “why not” excursions that turn into some those special memories. Some
stunning scenery of this remote coast
Just the rarity of seeing such a pristine and undeveloped coast will make this a part of our trip that I will not forget for a long time. Going to tuck this one away in my special memory file (what was I writing about?)
After India, Colorado and New Zealand I won't know how to react if Kilman Road will be free of livestock. |
Breakfast
Here we travel our 20km “Side” road @ 20kmp. Glad we didn’t read the fine print of car rental agreement. I think there is a extra charge if they have to pull you out of the Pacific (though mileage underwater doesn’t count)
The lighthouse that we are heading to is on top of the hill.
We left with only regretting not having an extra day to allow us to pitch camp for a night or three.
Maybe also without a secret wish of seeing some far off vessel approaching to explore this land as it would still have been found hundreds of years ago.
Maybe we leave regretting not seeing in the sea mist a small flotilla of Maoris canoes with tribesmen paddling to sacred fishing grounds.
As there were limited services as we drove here, maybe we leave regretting that there wasn’t a small coffee kiosk tuck away in the wind swept coastal meadow or in the Lighthouse itself.
We definitely leave regretting that I started this ramble and that …………
COMING SOON – HOW COMICAL A GUY COULD DECLARE, “BEST BEACH CAMP EVER!”
