TORRES DEL PAINE, PARQUE NACIONAL. REFUGIO CUERNOS

January 21, 2017

We've made our way to Refugio Cuernos. Here we are booked for a nights stay along with supper.

There is never ending entertainment watching all varieties of hikers coming, going, staying, resupplying, resting, tying their boots, bandaging up, ......
With the Refugio option, one will see trekkers with packs of just their limited daily personal needs right to ones with most house and home dangling off their backsides.

We have to be mindful of too much of a good thing. There is note of a changing ozone layer in this part of the world, resulting in highly prescribed UV notifications of caution. 11/10.

This rear deck is also nicely shielded from the continuing winds. The campground around the corner and rather exposed was less one tent as we saw it fly  by. Here fly takes on new meaning as it sailed up the valley.
(Our second to last night in the park will see us camping. Upon completion of your registration you are handed a permit, a hammer and a box of nails.)

During our stay, we will continue to compliment on  interactions with most things "Refugio". Starting with the check-ins which are run efficiently and courteously.
If your dinner ticket is tagged for 19:00hrs,
better not be late!

With Cuernos being a larger Refugio, here Kate and I join the first sitting of supper.

Pumpkin soups on.
Followed by a reasonable plate of some local Chilean salmon.

Sharing a table, as we will our room with this quartet from Australia.
(Thrughout this part of Chile there is something "Austral" everywhere. Go figure, it means "south")

View from our room.

Starting here we will come to terms that the actual hiking will become our second most challenging component of our trek. Firstly will be the:
"Roomie Roulette"
The gamble of whom and what worldly and bodily constitution they may prescribe to.

Our shared room for the night.
Everything has a rather...........
up close and personal
feel to it.

"Whats up there?"
This room features a third story bunk system that brings the total occupancy to eight in this, ... small cozy room
space with beds..
Take away one known commodity, that leaves a total of six souls that you are at the mercy of their manner-isms, or lack of.........................(I can go on and on but some things are best unwritten)
I pray and will fight for two things in my life.
My health
and to sleep with the fresh air from an open window.
Here they go hand and hand.

Here one gets to rise above your fellow man and woman.

In light of the international lottery of our fellow Australians and a couple of Asian roomies, lets just say that it all will add to the memories (maybe I was dreaming) of our Patagonian experience.
