GIBRALTAR. THERE'S A RUNWAY THAT RUNS THROUGH IT.

After we committed ourselves to Gibraltar, we thought best do a quick study of where we’re going. Besides the usual travel channel notes that here everything is sturdy as the rock of…………, there was a recurring mention that an airport runway cuts through the town. It having a rather significant impact on things, and I’m not talking about the actual arrivals and departures. Gibraltar itself is not large by global standards and most everything is packed into a rather small area, including the airport. The runway lies virtually along the border of the adjoining city of LaLinea, Spain, resulting that, excluding by sea,  ALL traffic, vehicular and pedestrian, need to cross said strip to get in and out of town. On a similar  scale of disruption and more as the Welland Canal, the town comes to a halt whenever any incoming or departing aircraft takes precedence.

With one of our favourite groceries stores on the other side Runway1A, we plan our shopping around the arrival and departure of British Airways flight No.836.

Just like the many various arrivals over the past thousands of years, we go exploring. We try to adapt as we travel. Here we are going full British (though there as significant Spanish presence being the immediate neighbour. A daily migration in both directions from the extremely close border.) and take in the heritage and tradition. These random images lead up to some fun eating and shopping and with Christmas just coming up, there’s a lot of both.

GIBRALTAR. EUROPA POINT.

Undoubtably Gibraltar is most famous for the ROCK and the history connected to it. Here we explore “Europa Point”. The southern most piece of land in continental Europe. The coast forming part of the “Straight”. Today a peaceful commercial passage way but during centuries of various wars, a strategic bastion of defence.

We certainly will be having some “Fish and Chips”. Perhaps some PEI spuds.

 Sometimes the most exciting travel times are when we end up at a unexpected destination thats not on our usual target list. The opportunity of a an apartment sit, complete with a cat, finds us in Gibraltar. Even with it being the southern most point in Continental Europe, it remains a British overseas territory. Famous and dominated by the ROCK, there is a lot of history that we’re planning on adding to. Here we’ll take a quick look around.
