PAUL NEMY, HYLA NEMY - ANTHONY LAKES, THE OREGON SKI TRAILS

DECEMBER 28, 2012

WHEN- DAY THREE, SECOND STATE, SECOND SKI AREA
WHERE – ANTHONY LAKES SKI AREA, OREGON, U.S.A.
WHY – MANY LOCALS ASKED WHY? WE LOVED IT.  THIS PLACE HAD ONE FIXED GRIP CHAIR LIFT AND SOMETHING RESEMBLING A ROPE TOW. IT DREW A CROWD THAT ENJOYED WHAT A TWO-LIFT SKI AREA WAS ALL ABOUT. SKIING!!
WHAT BEST FOOD – END OF THE DAY IN HAILEY IDAHO. BURRITOS CHILE RHELENOS
WHO- HYLA GRAB THE TICKETS. THE GUY IN FRONT OF HER GOT TO SKI FOR FREE. I CAN’T WAIT TILL I’M 73.

We both seemed to be taken by the simplicity of this place. The natural beauty, the views and the just down right friendly crowd. Even with one lift, there never was a line. It seemed that everyone skiing knew each other.  We easily started a conversation with our lift mates when they queried us of our ski tour.

We braved some rather cold temperatures.

The chair peaked out at 9,000ft

One of few RV parks that I approve. Snow chasers.

On behalf of the judging panel I am glad to give Anthony Lake Ski Area a maximum rating for proving that when the time is right, minimal works.

COMING NEXT - HITTING THE OREGON TRAIL TO IDAHO. GOING ON OPRAH WATCH.

I grow weary now. Good night

PAUL NEMY, HYLA NEMY - GOOD MORNING OREGON!

DECEMBER 28, 2012
Here Hyla and I bug out of La Grande, Oregon and head to Anthony Lakes Ski Place.

Our place had clean rooms, new beds, cable and not only free but better WI-FI than we have at home.
It was all quite royal.

Gettin' closer.

COMING NEXT - LOOKING FOR OREGON'S BEST KEPT SECRET.

PAUL NEMY, HYLA NEMY - HEADING TO LA GRANDE

DECEMBER 27, 2012
Both Hyla and I were in no rush to quit today but we did have some miles still ahead of us.  We are off to our overnight stop, La Grande, OREGON. USA

I have learned long ago that keeping the driver happy is rather important. No better way than some Whistler homemade truffles. BIG THANKS CAROL!!! At home I can equate the mileage of truffles per litre, but US gallons??? NICE HAT!

COMING NEXT - OUR NEXT SKI AREA MIGHT BE SO LAID BACK THAT NONE OF OUR CHAIRLIFT COMPANIONS TODAY EVER HAD HEARD OF IT????

PAUL NEMY, HYLA NEMY - WHITE PASS, WHOA PASS!

DECEMBER 27, 2012

WHEN - DAY  TWO

WHERE -  WHITE PASS, WASHINGTON, U.S.A.
WHY- BIG SNOW! OLD TIME SKI  FEEL. BIG MOUNTAIN
WHAT  WAS THE BEST FOOD OF THE DAY -  1)LA FIESTA BURRITO FIESTA SUPPER 2) BREAKFAST BUFFET AT THE TRAIL CREST. NO LINES FOR THE WAFFLE GRILL.
WHO ‘S  IN CHARGE OF READING THE MAP? UNSCHEDULE LATE NIGHT WALLA-WALLA VISIT.

What can we write about our first day of our road to ski trip? Well firstly Hyla can’t write nothin because the last time I check this was Going over Niagara Paul’s. Not some as clever Hyla’s……..

I am manning the keyboard BUT  rather large smiles on both our faces as we unbinded the boards this late afternoon pretty much said it ALL.

I was hoping to focus our ski trip on the out of the way, as few notable big name places and most importantly any place that doesn’t have “RESORT” highlighted endlessly on the half inch thick brochure.

Well well well. I am sad to report that our first stop, White Pass, has fallen into the sad category as in many beauty pageants and Olympic figure skating finals.  When you know you still have another ten contestants coming, you can’t give a perfect score to the first on stage. How can you score any one or ski hill that follows.
If White Pass was not our first hill, a perfect ten no, but….

Judges please:.
Big Mountain feel. Lots of altitude. No attitude.
Only a handful of lifts but the right positioning of old and new.
No lift lines. (Were are they when you need them. Rest please. Few but friendly people. LOCALS.
On mountain eats.
And oh yes
SNOW, LOTS. GROOMED. NATURAL. DEEP. POWDER. HURT MY LEGS BSAUTIFUL SNOW

LOTS of deep in the steep and trees.

No safety bars lets you get off and get skiin quicker.

COMING NEXT- SOME DRIVING PARTS OF THE “DRIVE,SKI, DRIVE, EAT, SLEEP”  TOUR

PAUL NEMY, HYLA NEMY - EAST, WEST, NORTH, SOUTH

DECEMBER 26, 2012
Day - One

After a rather effortless day of travel, including my pick up at the airport by Hyla, we ended up in central Washington State staged for our first day of skiing.

Burlington, Washington, U.S.A.
I find myself blessed to be back in an area that not five months ago I passed on a cycling adventure that I hold close to my heart.  These before and after images are of the exact spot that I cycled through westbound and Hyla and I travel southbound to Packwood Wa. for the night.

I recall taking this photo as it was the first day in many that I cycled in heavy traffic, let lone see a Freeway

COMING NEXT – COULD OUR FIRST DAY BE OUR BEST DAY?
