LORRAINE AND LARRY KOOP

September 23, 2017

We have guests.

One of the most historic vacation districts on all of Georgian Bay is Pointe au Baril. With a rich industry of fur trading, lumber mills and commercial fishing preceding it, for over one hundred years it has been a summer destination not just for the then newly emerging cottaging industry of southern Ontario, but for people literally from all over the world.

Just to the south of our "Bayfield inlet" area, today we'll follow the charted nautical route and go see what the fuss is all about.

As long as we've known the Koops, they have done a lot. Here Larry can add "Helmsman" to his adventure resume.

With all the submerged obstacles about, Lorraine can add survivor of voyage with Rookie Helmsman.

I was looking for the famous lighthouse when Kate politely yelled out, "hey dumb-ass, its right .....!!"

The original village was a busy water access only fur trading, fishing and lumber port.

In days of limited navigational markers (mostly half submerged ship wrecks of these treacherous waters) this marker has indicated safe harbouring just beyond.
A barrel has been at this point since circa 1870.

There has been some form of lighthouse at this point since circa 1890.

Another of the famous and historical landmarks in the area is the Ojibway Club. This water access property has been serving the locals in some form since 1906.

Unfortunately our plans of being served hand over foot with little sandwiches with the crust cut off will have to wait till next year.
Closed for the season.

It's been great fun even for Kate and I as we don't seem to go exploring enough with our little corner so spectacular.

Safely back on the island, we are blessed with great weather that even warrants a jump in the warming bay.

(Not a couple of weeks ago kate and I jumped in, AND THEN IMMEDIATELY JUMPED OUT)
