BAYFIELD INLET, ONTARIO - ICE HIKERS. EPISODE TWO, 2014

JANUARY 26, 2014

ATTACK ON THE POLAR VORTEX ATTACK

Like some of the best played plans of the greatest expeditions in history, our scheduled start was delayed by unpredictable weather. After holding up in Parry sound for a couple of nights surviving on take-out and basic cable (Yes. We were tested early into expedition by having to watch... BASIC CABLE) we took advantage of a small Polar Vortex window and geared-up.

Our day was absent of the snows of the last two days, but still bitterly cold.

Alexander Passage. Bayfield Inlet
Minus twenty had us on the move quickly.

With having laid up supplies in the fall, our load in was minimal.

Snowmobile tracks lead us for about
half of our eight kilometre hike.

A couple of huts just by the marina.
The last signof life for a while for us.

O.K....I now have so many under layers on that my snow pants keep sliding down .... slow up for a second...need to redo!

Ice conditions are always unpredictable and sometimes nerve testing. With Bayfield Inlet being part of Georgian Bay, the concept of it being all static water is not true. The constant water movement, whether it being wind or any many other variables, prevents uniformed freeze-up and even spots of open water in the coldest of winters. We will also see slushy conditions under areas of snow build-up.
We have planned our trip with the help of local resident Doug W. The more we know the better to scare and push us as far into the safety zone as possible
(Very thought provoking to hear of the fellow who fell through last week)
All warranting our safety gear of ropes, ice picks, .....

Almost out to open Georgian Bay ice, here we get our first look at our boat channel. Our island, D40, and hopefully still there, our cabin is on the horizon.

WHAT WILL WE FIND?

Will we be Surviorman and Woman?

  1. Hi everyone, John Schreiber here. My sisters and I are thinking of doing a winter ski out the cottage on Menilly Island. Any comments on the ice conditions that far out of the inlet? Thanks and all the best to everyone for 2021.
