MAD RIVER GLEN, WAITSFIELD, VERMONT.USA

LESS WILL BE MORE BETTER

On a run of visiting some trails less carved and old ski school destinations. Not a detachable in sight. Travelling today in hope of recapturing some of yesterday's, pre-mega, mountain magic.

"go small and we won't go home"

March 15, 2018

A cold but welcomed start to our day.
Three, two weeks ago when we were casually scheming this adventure, it looked like Vermont's ski season was and had come to an end.
New Hampshire was looking more likely as a destination

A prayer that I forgot to say had been answered.
Days before our commitment and departure, most of the USA eastern seaboard had been pounded by the most wintry and un-like March weather any spring snow sport enthusiasts could forever hope for.

Not having a bucket list for the fear of dying the next day I complete it, the inner life long skier in me needs to bag a couple of still unfulfilled voids.

One significantly being skiing
Mad River Glen.
check it out

Home to many things heritage in North American skiing hills.

We've skied at many a green mountain in Vermont,
but I'll never forget the day I skied Mad River Glen.

Release the hounds.
Kate will carry on the old school tradition and head up hard.

I've come for the classic.

The legendary single.
Chair Number One.
The longest operating chairlift in North America.

Even with the credentials of it being the fastest fixed grip lift in North America,
the single's solitude offers a great time to reflect and be a little introspective:
"have the Olympics turned in a bunch of corporate vampires sucking on the shattered dreams of......."
"how much it would suck to win a gold in a demonstration sport?"
"Have the monkey Olympics on FOX become........"

A number of weather fronts will eventually drop anywhere from 36"-60" of snow across Vermont and the east in a matter of one week.

What adds to the legendary status of MRG is the mountain.
Being light on the greens and blues, the limited grooming and snowmaking on aggressive terrain caters to the devil does care crowd.

Rated the steepest skiable terrain in all of the east.

MECCA
to challenge your(not necessary mine)
METTLE

Leading up to our visit, MRG's honest and open snow condition reporting seemed to doom our trip.
Today in their modesty, they honestly and openly deemed this day
EPIC!

Look Aunt Gladys!
No Boarders.

 Gear du jour.
Grow a pair.

MRG sings the tune:
"Ski it if you can"
I originally interpreted it as "if you are able to get here"......
I am slowly reassessing that as "if you(my) legs can"......

Rip it, rock it
Davey Crockett.

Ready to pull the bow back,
and let this arrow take flight.

(not yet quite ready to prance these
 hills with my butterfly net.)

OW natuarle!!

Release the bees.

Here's another gem of the glen.
General Stark's Pub
(The whole main chalet is very well used and beat up badly, which I absolutely love)
A classic in the making since 1947.

I've shifted to self preservation since I don't think they are going to raise the legal drinking age to seventy-five any time soon.
Still can't mean that I don't enjoy the ambience.
Ambience including a Rueben we shared.

We actually planned our visit around seeing this
blues duo on the calendar.
Fondue après ski. Bonus.

Mad River Glen

Ski it if you can!!

Iconic.
Iconic indeed.
