BAYFIELD INLET. WINTER 2011. PART ONE OF SIX

February 25, 2011

With a trip looming (can't remember the last time I loomed?) hopefully not to far off on the ice jammed horizon, thought we'd look back to some older ice and snow. Some pretty cold weather to start 2018, not to mention how frigidly we closed 2017 has our hopes up.

Here Kate, Nicola and I prep for our first ever winter trek in to the island. 2011.
We've come prepared with snowshoes, cross country skis but opt to just walk on water.

Thompson Marina.

One day might do a "Hans Brinker" and silver skate  our way in. No better way to go viral than an unintentional "sow cow" followed by a face "lutz" and then close with a single groin "double axel".

The lower water back in 2011 seemed to gives a little more sure footing to hike in.

Snowmobile tracks offer a sense of security to what already seemed, never taken for granted(ropes lashed for the ready), like concrete like ice.

More recent winter trips see us sled in the limited supplies we bring.
Three other trips can be found posted in the mix of this blog.

Freeze frame

Emergency ice picks in hand.

We've laid up a large cache of supplies during the fall. Here we will bring just some fresh staples along with a few personals.

Shore lunch.

Being near the mouth of Alexander Passage, our eight kilometre boat ride will convert to a hike.

are we there yet?

Here we are. Compared to some following winter trips where we've had to do some pretty serious shovelling, we'll just walk up and in.

Part one of six
Join us next for that magical time of lighting the wood stove and bringing back some warmth to our little cabin.
