NAIN, LABRADOR - THE WILD NORTH - EXTRA NAIN

DAY FOURTEEN
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 2013
NAIN, LABRADOR

We planned our visit to Nain based on the regular schedule of our means of return passage, The Northern Ranger. Already yesterday we have known that it will be late. How much at the time we weren't sure but now know we will be in town an extra day and expecting our departure the next afternoon.

More time to explore. More time to take advantage of the exceptional weather. Most everyone here has a ATV. Makes sense. There are your regular vehicles here but the longest local road might be five kilometres long.

Though there are no roads to and fro here, we hear that this car just finished driving the Trans Labrador Highway

I know where there is a good windshield replacement place if you need one, two...
(we haven't finished our great gravel grunt yet)

Here we do another hike and find a great view and.....

BUGS!!!!
The infamous black flies.
Not the larger Ontario version you might be use to, but what they lack in size they make up in the pain and biting and scratching in the neck. They were still crawling out of my hair at supper time.

Welcome to Labrador and all it's famous for.

Up your nose with a rubber hose and black flies.
You can run, but you can't  hide.
Meet you at the unmarked abandoned well.

Looks like I'm up to no good.
Hey hoodlum?
Enjoying this still warm day with a  Innu slushie.

The Coast Guard vessel, The Hudson, that's been anchored in the harbour was having a crew change.
The just flown in new crew our heading to the Northwest Passage and then onto Greenland.
They will be primarily doing oceanographic and scientific research.
We learn that the Hudson made history by being the first ship in history to circumnavigate both North and South America in a single voyage and getting a record "Petrol Points".

This fellow was fishing with his kid.

 Got one!
I had to laugh that when this guy snagged this two wheeler, a school of large Artic Char swam by.

We saw it first hand where kids in town seem to "steal" bikes and then nonchalantly toss them into the great big sea for fun.

Catch and release. Much to the delight of this kid.

Get some oil on that chain, man!
