NAXOS, GREECE. OUR FIRST PORT OF CALL

With time to fill after our ski adventure, Kate and I decided before we left Canada that we would head first to Greece and then north up the Adriatic Sea before we catch a flight back home from Venice, Italy.

Other than knowing it would be some islands, where we would go we thought we would figure out when we got there.

What we did start to pick up before our arrival was that early March was very early for  their
tourist season.

Our decision on which islands to visit will be somewhat dictated by the availability, or lack of, certain ferry services.

We will make it to two of the most famous destinations in Greece, Santorini and Mykonos, but our first port of call will initially be a unknown name that will turn out to be our favourite,
The Island of Naxos.

Fresh

The island was promoted as having a fairly stable year round population. This will make it feel more local at this time of year.
Apparently some islands pretty much close after the last tourist and cruise ship leave for the season and not open the shutters back up till April, or maybe even May in some places.

We'll have that one!

Our good fortune has us arriving just in time for Carnival.
Three days of rubbing shoulders with men, women, children and the odd party animal.

AND I'M TALKING ANIMAL

NAXOS, GREECE

Random NAXOSness

Goat, sheep, cow. You pick.
The islands larger size and fairly large year round population sustains a little agriculture which added to the local feel.

We happened upon carnival weekend.
Stick around and see us join in and try to burn the place to the ground.

Our room will prove to be excellently located in the old town. (old here is one hundred, one thousand?, you pick). Along with the view, we will never not know what time its as the church bells seem to be on the balcony next to us.

ATHENS, GREECE. PIRAEUS PORT

MARCH 10, 2016

Kate and I will now leave Athens for now and sail off to our Greek Isles adventure

This seaport is the largest in Europe and apparently the third busiest in the world.
Even evident now and the island's ferry services are far from peak season.

Lets see where we end up?
