THE CROWSNEST HIGHWAY. CYCLING THE BC3. FERNIE TO SPARWOOD, BC. CANADA

September 07, 2019

I've long looked at British Columbia as the "Super" natural playground they have promoted for years.
The endless sporting opportunities, land and seascapes, scenery and the vibe and lifestyle that follows.
If I associated any commerce with the province it has for a number of reasons been weighed to the wood products industry.
Still evident in my previous and current travels.

Not to debate in any manor, a dirty secret perhaps, but the number one export,
one hundred years ago that created towns like Fernie and many that I will pass through in this Southeastern corner of BC,
to towns hanging on today,
is and always has been,

COAL.

The area is home to some of the largest open pit coal mines anywhere.

This easy going fellow, with his trailered world possessions, left Milton, Ontario July 1st.
Heading to Victoria.

Sparwood, BC.

Trading bike-packing notes with these nice fellows who have just come off the Great Divide route.
