TORRES DEL PAINE, PARQUE NACIONAL. REFUGIO TORRE CENTRAL TO REFUGIO EL CHILENO.

January 23, 2017

Can't write on an empty stomach so here I'm going to have a coffee and some breakfast.

Then we'll take a look at what might possibly turn out to be our largest day.

We certainly cannot complain about the weather since we started travelling, now closing in on two months.
Though If there was one day that we wished we could have traded some previous sun for today's showers, this would have been it.
Supposedly there are some views where we intend to go.

The relative close proximity of the main lodge to todays target of Las Torres makes for a busy trail.
Even then day hikers will face upwards of ten hours on the trail for a return trip from the Mirador.

Today after our morning climb to Regugio El Chileno, we possibly will continue on to the parks most iconic feature,
 Los Torres.

It continues to be mild so some showers won't bother us too much. We are also well prepared for what will turn out to be our night of tenting.

Here the rather short collective distance is indicating by the longer time allotments that it's going to be a "good" climb up.

What expedition is not fraught with danger and the fear of the unknown. Here we come upon tracks that eerily appear rather large in size. A noted physical feature of the now extinct (wiped out by....), or not, tribe of indigenous people, The Tehuelches.

Closing in on our first target of the day, Refugio El Chileno. It will mark our campground and after the two hour trek up here, half way point to the Mirador Base Las Torres.

With the wood stove on, we'll enjoy the Refugio's hospitality as we have lunch and dry out .

The word on arrival is that the overnight rains have temporary closed the trial further up. This is where we quietly chant the mantra of:
"This is Patagonia. Don't like the weather, just wait awhile"

I was also buying into:

"Never stop looking for whats not there"

Well don't you know, some blue streaks are starting to appear  and the word is that the trail will open soon.
Somehow our team has voted against the somewhat popular "leave camp at 04:00 to catch the sunrise on Las Torres" and we've opted to head out and up now,
but first we will set up camp.

Join us as just the hike to our site is categorised in some climbing circles(mine).
